Director Lucy Delap spoke alongside Dr Helen Pankhurst of Care International, Sharmila Jansz of Wateraid, Alphonsine Kabagado of Womankind, and Kenyan campaigner Judy Kosgei at the 2014 Women of the World Festival on March 8th. Held at London's South Bank Centre, the panel discussed the changes in women's lives, and the role that access to sanitation can play in achieving development goals. The experiences of women in twentieth century Britain, and the slowness of change in their domestic settings, can shed light on how change might be approached in the lives of many women living without adequate access to water and sanitation in the developing world. Change was not driven by technological development, but by improved access to paid employment for British women in the 1950s, argued Lucy Delap.
